Cool Facts

  • Only a handful of North American birds sing, and these are the main birds. The female North Cardinal sings and is often in the nest. A couple of birds sing the lyrics alternately. But the female can sing a longer and slightly more complex song than the male.
  • You’ve often seen both men and women hitting glasses. They do this to protect their habitat from invaders. They see the reflection in the mirror as an enemy. Sometimes these birds can fight with glass for hours like this. After a few weeks, when the aggressive hormone level drops, these attacks end.
  • The Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states.
