Squirrels belong to the Sciuridae family. The name is derived from the Greek word ‘Skiouros’, which means “shade tail.” These animals are special because of their long and large tails. The squirrels’ family consists of tree squirrels, ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, prairie dogs, and flying squirrels. Not only that, there are about 270 species of mice in the Sciuridae family.
Squirrels often live close to the human population. Honestly, You are in a city, a village, a desert, and you can see the Squirrels anywhere. There are squirrels wherever people are. Some people are interested in keeping squirrels as pets. In some countries, they are also hunting for food.
Squirrels love to gather food. They bury their food for the winter. But they do not always find them. Some nuts are lost. Some steal nuts. Do you know? Squirrels lose 74% of their buried fruit. Disappeared nuts are not hidden forever. These hidden seeds and nuts can be transformed into large oak trees, giving a lot to the animal community.
As we have said before, most of the nuts buried by squirrels are stolen by food thieves (other squirrels and birds). Some squirrels pretend to bury much fruit because of this problem, but they do not actually bury anything.
