Tonga, one of the 77 lions in the Glen Garriff Conservation near Harrismith, South Africa, epitomizes grandeur. But this time, he’s not majestic. The huge male recently awoke, and his once impressive hair now needs a haircut.

At the perfect place and timing, wildlife photographer Simon Needham got a shot of the unkempt lion!

“I had to wait for Tonga to wake up from his siesta since he looked utterly out of it,” the photographer said. ‘He looked bewildered and puzzled for a second before shakin’ off,’ I laughed.

This is not the first time the British photographer has captured the people of Glen Garriff Conservation. A year ago, his images of Moya, another stunning lion, went popular online. Needham’s effort is to raise awareness about the plight of wild African lions.

“I shoot for numerous animal NGOs, including GG Conservation in South Africa,” the photographer stated. “I’m thrilled to be a part of bringing attention to GG Conservation Glen Garriff and their 77 lions. A lion in need of a significant haircut undoubtedly gets warm sympathies and a smile from people.”
